THE price of ice cream is set to go up this summer due topoor crops in India & Mexico
Production of Vanilla, the 2nd most expensive spice, has failed in Mexico and in India, The London edition of the Daily Telegraph has reported:
Vanilla must be grown in tropical climates, and producing crops is a pretty involved and lengthy process. This year's poor harvests resulted in speculators stockpiling vanilla pod supplies from the big producing countries,Madagascar and Indonesia, forcing up the traded price of vanilla pods from around $US25 per kilogram to between $35 - $40 in a short space of 2 months.
Vanilla is still one of the best selling ice cream flavours, it will mean a probable increase of 10% in the overall price of the finished product. Not much for most Ice Cream enthusiasts, but enough to cause some headaches and supply issues with Ice Cream wholesalers and retailers.
The flip side of the stock piling could also backfire on the speculators once a regular supply is restored, but it is impossible to know when this will occur.
According to Mintec: "The stocks in the world are being run down, and we are getting to a point now where we are likely to see the price suddenly shoot upwards."
He added, "It is the most expensive ingredient in ice cream production per kilogram, so it is highly likely that some producers will not be able to absorb the extra cost. It could push the price of ice cream up by around 10 per cent."

Fitness franchises are getting to be more and more popular nowadays, considering how much people are concerned about their health. Keep in mind though that there are numerous franchises out today so it is important for individuals to choose which provider they want. That being said, following are some tips when making a decision.
Be Specific
Fitness franchises can usually be divided in different categories. There are those that offer mostly aerobic exercises, others that need a collection of equipment while there are those that have yoga in their offered services. It is important that a buyer has a specific favorite so that they will be in a better position to handle the franchise. The good news is that there are so many fitness franchises today that finding one that fits requirements is easy.
Budget
Fitness franchises can be expensive depending on the specific niche that it caters to. Hence, buyers need to set aside a specific cap for their budget in order to make sure that they don’t spend too much. The good news is that most franchises offer different “packages”, allowing individuals to choose the one that best fits their budget.
Inquire about Requirements
Note that fitness franchises often have requirements before approving a franchise. For example, there must be a specific amount of people within the area before a firm would allow the franchise of their business. This is because they need to make sure that the market is big and receptive enough for the business to thrive. Ideally, individuals should first send an inquiry about the requirements for different fitness franchises and make sure that they meet those needs.
Compare
When comparing fitness franchises, it is important that individuals not only consider the cost of the project. Also take into account the level of service or help the franchising firm would offer their client. Franchises would usually provide specific workouts that are practiced in their brand as well as the use of different equipment. The level of training employees have for the franchise is also important. Take note of all these factors and compare them with others before arriving at a decision.
Of course, some people may argue that starting up a personal-brand fitness gym instead of fitness franchises is also possible. Although this is true, franchises usually bring in more clients due to the reputation of the brand. Since lots of people are already aware of the brand name, they will be more receptive in becoming a member. Plus, franchises make it easier for individuals to set up everything they need for the business.

The robbery is part of a worrying trend in many small towns in Australia. The high Australia dollar, soaring unemplyment outside the mining sector, and excessive business regulations are pushing youths towards criminal activities. This is especially evident in Sydney's west and in QLD's Gold Coast, but the trend is nationwide.

A franchise is a network of businesses that belong to a group. The business group issues licences for individual businesses to market it’s own products or services. Most franchise groups grant licences to operate in specific territories. A franchised business is usually owned by an independent business owner that either reports or participates in decisions affecting the entire chain.
For example, if I’d like to start a small donut shop. I could either start from scratch, buy my own equipment, do my own marketing, arrange my own lease etc. Or I could approach an existing franchise chain, such as “Dunkin Donuts“, and request to join them as a “franchisee”. The franchise head office in most cases will evaluate my request, qualify my finances, get me to commit to premises lease and sign the dotted line. After the signup process and the initial commitment, the franchise head office will supply me with equipment and guidance as to how to get the outlet up and running. The degree of assistance from the franchisor (the operator of the franchised chain) does vary between franchised chains.
Franchises are very popular in Australia and ar estimated to turn over around $128 billion / year. You can find franchised business networks in many industries. Takeaway food shops, restaurant, gourmet pizzas, juice bars, mobile food / drink services, TV & radio stations, financial advisories, beauty parlours, hairdressing, trades services, cleaning, printing, automotive products, supermarkets, fitness centres, ice cream / chocolates, hotels, education and the list goes on.
Possibly the most successful franchise chain of all is McDonalds family restaurants. With over 30,000 outlets, $25 billion in annual revenue, 1.5 million staff, and 70,000 million customers daily in over 120 countries – there is no other chain that comes close to it. In Australia, it is estimated that every 3rd takeaway meal served – is a McDonald’s meal. The company went from a standalone BBQ shop in 1940 to an international giant.
Around the world, franchises chains enjoy a varying degree of success and exposure. Per capita, New Zealand has the highest amount of franchised chains per capita, with over 400 chains operating and only 3 million people. China has seen a massive rise in recent years in the franchise industry with over 2000 KFC outlets opening, at double the rate of McDonalds. India, in comparison, is lagging in this field. With widespread poverty and heavy regulations imposed on foreign investors – the 1+ billion nation is far behind most developed nations when measuring on a per capita basis.
In Australia, franchising is regulated by the "Franchising Code of Conduct", under the Trade Practices Act of 1974. This code requires franchise network operators to produce a PDS which must be given to franchisees at least 14 days before entering an agreement.
Franchised businesses have a much better track record of success, when comparing to non-franchised businesses. Belonging to a franchised network has shown to pay off, mainly due to the vast amount of knowledge and experience that is passed on as standard from the franchisor. Many beginners in the small business world, start off in the franchise industry, then move on to build on their knowledge and create a new franchise system.

With fast foods passing the $16 billion mark last year in Australia, pizza franchise opportunities are becoming more and more appealing for both large and small investors.
The low input costs of the ingredients and the relatively easy preparation process make pizzas particularly lucrative. Most large chains operate conveyor belt ovens, which require very little training to operate, and in many cases junior employees can easily fill most positions in the shop level.
The flip side of the relatively easy setup of a pizza shop is that competition in this market has become fierce. With large pizzas selling as low as $4.95, this can make it difficult for smaller shops to stay in business.
The franchise opportunities in the Pizza market offer many advantages. The big branded chains are very well known, which makes it easy to establish yourself in a new market. Most people are used to the idea of ordering a takeaway pizza and are familiar with the choices on offer.
It is easier to sell a brand than a product. It’s a lot easier to remember a name that is already popular in the market rather than building a new one. Those popular names and brands already has a well-built customer base or following. It will be easy to sell their products as they are ingrained in the customer’s consciousness.
Most franchise chains offer:
So how do you choose the best franchise for you? There are quite a few franchise chains in the market, and the slight differences between them can help you decide which one to go with.
In mid-lower income suburbs, the larger, more affordable offers tend to be more successful. While in the inner city and richer suburbs, people often choose to go with the more upmarket, smaller shops.
Dominos Pizza, Pizza Hut and Eagle Boys seem to be dominating the franchise market, with others such as Pizza Haven, Hell Pizza are still growing rapidly. Another success story is Pizza Capers, which has grown for 1 to 100+ stores in Australia in a few short years.
The typical setup cost of most outlets is around $350,000 including franchise fees, but this price does vary based on location and your choice of franchise.

It has been said that in a a new business nothing happens until a sale is made. In franchising like in most industries, this statement is painfully acurate.
Most people in retail have to keep an eye on turnover at the shop level. The franchisor has the responsibility to ensure a constant supply of customers, as a number of failing franchises can very quickly reflect poorly on the entore chain.
In most cases the franchise network will not make a profit until 3-4 franchised units are operating. The first franchisees in a system will not realise the benefits of group advertising, group purchasing power or trademark recognition until the number of franchisees in the system grows. Marketing dollars that 1 franchisee cannot afford will still pay off in many cases for the franchisor once he can sell a few licences to other franchise operators.
As with other aspects of a franchise expansion, the new franchisor will likely be very inexperienced in franchise marketing. Questions arise such as: Where does one find prospective franchisees? How can prospective franchisees be attracted to buy a particular franchise? What information should be given to interested parties? What should the franchisor look for in evaluating a franchisee? How do you "close" a franchise sale? Etc.
